It is a city of ancient and important industrial traditions that have earned it the nickname "Milan of the Marches" since the late 19th century.
As evidence of its glorious historical past, which in the 12th century also saw it as a small capital of the Respublica Aesina, it preserves an historic center with interesting monuments, still surrounded by an almost intact 15th-century city wall. Since medieval times it has been one of the most important and active centers in the region.
It is the third most populous city in the province of Ancona after Ancona and Senigallia.
