The Castelvecchio Museum (Civic Museum) is a museum in Verona, northern Italy, located in the medieval castle of the same name.
The restoration by architect Carlo Scarpa between 1959 and 1973 improved the appearance of the building and the finds.
Scarpa's architectural style is visible in the details of doors, stairs, furnishings, and even fixtures designed to hold a specific piece of artwork.
The refurbishment has carefully balanced the old and the new, revealing the history of the original building where appropriate.
Unusual at the moment, this approach has now become a common approach to renovation.
After the transition to the Italian state it remained a barracks, until, in 1924, thanks to Antonio Avena, director of the civic museums, and Ferdinando Forlati, architect of the Superintendency, a medieval-style restoration was carried out and it became the seat of the Verona civic art collections , with works ranging from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century.
With the restoration in style, the towers were raised, the patrol walkways restored and the interiors decorated in medieval and Renaissance style.
During the Second World War Verona was one of the most bombed cities in Italy due to its strategic position and the presence of many ministries of the Italian Social Republic, and during one of the numerous allied raids, on January 4, 1945, it was seriously damaged as well. Castelvecchio, and only a few months later the fleeing Germans blew up all the bridges in Verona, including the Castelvecchio bridge.
Subsequently the restoration of the castle was commissioned to Carlo Scarpa and the restoration of the bridge to Libero Cecchini with the superintendent Piero Gazzola.
The Castelvecchio Museum exhibits important collections of medieval, Renaissance and modern art (up to the 18th century):
- 29 exhibition rooms of paintings, sculptures, archaeological finds, weapons
- works exhibited: 622
- in specialized Cabinets: about 90,000 coins and medals, 2,650 drawings, 8,000 prints, 800 photographic plates
- in storage: 2,500 paintings, around 500 sculptures and bronzes, around 800 furniture and decorative arts, 300 weapons and 200 ethnographic collection
