Brancaleone

Brancaleone is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria. It has been called "city of sea turtles" because on its beaches, as well as on those of neighboring municipalities, the common turtle (Caretta caretta) lays eggs, making this stretch of coast the most important spawning area in the whole 'Italy. The association of course Brancaleone, located in the Calabrian municipality, deals with the monitoring of nesting sites and the recovery and care of specimens caught accidentally.

In the past the town was called Sperlonga or Sperlinga. This denomination was later replaced with Mottaleonis, composed of motta (rise) and lion, probably with a metaphorical sense. The current name is believed to be a nickname.
