Bianco is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in Calabria. The municipality is located on the coast of the Locride area, known as the jasmine coast.
It owes its name to the badlands, limestone hills that surround the inhabited center and that appeared to the sailors from the sea as a white spot on the coast. The municipality of Bianco obtained several times, in the early 2000s, the Blue Flag for clean sea, which attracts a high number of tourists every year in proportion to the number of residents, and which constitutes the main economic resource.
The built-up area of Bianco built in the 10th century was abandoned due to the 1783 earthquake; some remains of it remain a few kilometers from the new inhabited center. Most of the inhabitants settled near the coast giving rise to the new town called Bianco Novo. The settlement was populated definitively by its people when, following the 1908 earthquake, the ancient village was definitively abandoned.
