Traces of human settlements - inhabited and necropolis - testify that the territory of Piazza Armerina was certainly inhabited since the most ancient eras.
In historical times, probably the Greeks of Gela founded the first city. As for the Romans, Villa del Casale is an extraordinary testimony to the sublimation of the beauty of the places and the charm that the region has exercised on this warrior people par excellence.

The Normans, together with their Lombard allies here fought the Arabs, rebuilding the town on the current site after the ruin of ancient Plutia. The local dialect is part of the so-called Gallo-Italic strain, which still testifies to the presence of northern populations in the medieval city. The inhabited center is spread over three hills of different heights: surrounded by woods, among the most important and beautiful in Sicily, it offers the eye with the houses clinging to the heights and dominated by the Aragonese Castle and the Cathedral with its large dome and with its bell tower 40 meters high.

The Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption, dating back to 1604 and erected on the site of an older church, of which the lower part of the bell tower remains, can be reached along the ancient medieval streets. A number of works of historical and artistic value, belonging to various eras, are kept in the single large nave. Note: a Madonna that would have been donated to Count Roger the Norman by Pope Nicholas II; some paintings by Giuseppe Salerno; the two-faced crucifix of the "master of the cross", remained unknown; the Assumption of the painter Filippo Paladino.
