Villa Garzoni

Villa Garzoni is a Venetian villa designed by Jacopo Sansovino in 1540 in Pontecasale, a hamlet in the municipality of Candiana, in the province of Padua. The Garzoni family turned to Sansovino so that he would give prestige, with the construction of a house, to his enterprise of draining and reclaiming most of the marshy area that surrounded Pontecasale.

The bottom on which the villa stands was confiscated by the Venetian Republic to the rebel Luigi Dal Verme (Alvise), imperial count of Sanguinetto and count of Bobbio and Voghera and auctioned in 1440. The Garzoni bought it later, in 1462.

The villa is surrounded by an imposing wall that encloses the building, the stables and the land inside: an imposing gate on the main road opens an avenue that leads up to the staircase leading to the entrance of the Villa. The façade has a double loggia and on the back opens a porticoed courtyard, traditional in the architecture typical of the Bassa: on the side you can admire long barchesse, the park and a small chapel which houses stuccos designed by Sansovino himself.
