Theater of Marcellus

Archaeological site in Rome.

The Theater of Marcellus is a theater of ancient Rome, still partially preserved, built at the behest of Augustus in the southern area of the Campo Marzio (known as Circo Flaminio) between the Tiber river and the Campidoglio.

The theater could accommodate about 15,000 spectators and up to 20,000 in conditions of maximum crowding, an estimate that would coincide with what is reported in the Regional Catalogs.

The building is visible only from the outside as over the years private homes have been built.
