The Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore (original name early Christian basilica palatina) is a Catholic basilica in Milan. Among the oldest churches in the city, the building was rebuilt and modified several times in the external forms, almost completely preserving the primitive plant from the late ancient period: together with the opposite columns of San Lorenzo, once part of the building's portico, it is considered among the major Roman monumental complexes in Milan.
The basilica is also believed to be the first central symmetry building in the Christian West. Although the basilica of San Lorenzo is one of the oldest Milanese churches and since its construction one of the major monuments of Milan and the Christian West, no exhaustive writings prior to the Renaissance are known so far. The lack of official documents of the time therefore makes it impossible to provide certain and univocal information regarding the foundation of the basilica.
With regard to the origins of the complex, a series of conjectures have been made over time, some even very imaginative and without actual findings, up to a series of archaeological excavations in the 20th century carried out on the site that have made it possible to make more concrete hypotheses.
