The Castello del Buonconsiglio Museum Monuments and provincial collections is divided into five locations in the province and includes, in addition to the Buonconsiglio of Trento, the Castle of Stenico in the Giudicarie, Castel Beseno near Rovereto, Castel Thun in Val di Non and Castel Caldes in Val di Sole.
Castel Caldes is located at the mouth of the Val di Sole and overlooking the Noce stream, the majestic manor dominates the nearby town of Caldes.
The current appearance of the castle is the result of various architectural phases that began in the thirteenth century and continued until the sixteenth century. The first nucleus was built between 1230 and 1235, a five-storey tower that also served as a residence, built at the behest of Rambaldo and Arnoldo da Cagnò. It was used, together with the overhanging Rocca di Samoclevo, for the control of commercial traffic in the Val di Sole.
Legend has it that the castle was the scene of the imprisonment of a young woman named Olinda, perhaps to be identified in the countess Marianna Elisabetta Thun, who was locked up by her father Rodemondo in a small room to prevent her marriage to Arunte, court minstrel for the which died of love.
