Maniace Castle is a massive defensive structure build upon the gulf of Ortigia; the emperor Frederick II entrusted its construction to the architect Riccardo da Lentini, who fulfilled its task between 1232 and 1239.
Troughout the centuries, it was used as barracks, noble estate and prison, until it was partially destroyed in 1704 by the explosion of a powder keg.
It was then renovated and enlarded, and finally demilitarized. It is nowadays open to the public.
