Gaeta

Gaeta is an Italian town in the province of Latina in southern Lazio, which until 1927 belonged to the province of Terra di Lavoro and in Roman times to the Latium adiectum.

The first settlements in the territory of Gaeta date back to the eighth century BC. and in 345 BC the city was won by Rome, who transformed it into an important holiday resort.

With the fall of the Western Roman Empire Gaeta experienced many looting by the barbarian populations and the Saracens.
The castle was built to defend the city of gaeta.
In the eighth century AD the town was freed from imperial authority and a century later gave rise to the Duchy of Gaeta.
The experience of the duchy ended in 1140 when Gaeta was conquered by King Roger II of Altavilla.

In the Angevin phase the city resumed playing an important role. In 1442 Alfonso of Aragon defeated Renato, the last ruler of the Angevins in Southern Italy. During the Aragonese domination a new castle was built (called "Angioino") while the old one was modernized and joined to the new one.
Under the Spaniards Gaeta further increased its importance by virtue of its strategic / military position. Pontifical ships sailed from Gaeta and took part in the famous battle of Lepanto which canceled forever the ambitions of naval power of the Ottoman Empire.
The proclamation of the Roman Republic prompted Pope Pius IX, on November 25, 1848, to take refuge in Gaeta as a guest of the Bourbons. During his stay in Gaeta he proclaimed the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception.

The last battle between the Kingdom of the two Sicilies and the Piedmontese army was fought in Gaeta, which ended on February 13, 1861 with the surrender of Francis II of Bourbon.
