Strassoldo

The village of Strassoldo is a fraction of the municipality of Cervignano del Friuli, in the province of Udine.

It is a rare example of an ancient medieval village, extremely well preserved, and of rare charm.

Cradle of the patrician family of the same name, it gave the Habsburg Empire of Austria a long series of important officials and generals.

According to tradition, Strassoldo was built in the Ottonian era to counter the raids of the Hungarians but it is probable that the origins of the complex are Langobard, a bulwark against the dangerous Byzantine presence coming from the coast. The family, descended from the lords of Lavariano, belonged to the free feudals, that is, settled in Friuli before 1077, the year of the formalization of the temporal power of the patriarch of Aquileia, and in every age it played a leading role in Friulian history.

Around the ancient tower, scapezzato in the nineteenth century but still 12 meters high, develops the castle above, which is accessed through the ancient Cistigna gate, with the stately building overlooking an elegant garden enclosed by streams, various buildings once with an agricultural and administrative function and in the center the church of San Nicolò, an ancient castle chapel enlarged in the eighteenth century, of beautiful design, with interesting examples of local art. The interior of the palace (which was also inhabited by Marshal Radetzky, husband of a Countess Strassoldo) presents environments rich in family memories.
