Visconti Castle

The Visconti Castle of Pavia was built in 1360 by Galeazzo II Visconti. The Viscontis also wanted to design a magnificent hunting park, which originally extended for about ten kilometers, up to the Certosa di Pavia; today part of the territory of the park is still present, but no longer connected to the castle, and called Parco della Vernavola.

The construction of a "citadel" fortified to the west of the new building, on the area adjacent to S. Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, allowed the development of residential rather than military aspects: in fact, more than a fortress, the Castle of Pavia it was above all the splendid site of a refined court, as it is still possible to guess from the large external mullioned windows, from the loggias of the courtyard and from the frescoes of the inner rooms, elements that reflect the taste of international Gothic.
