Sappada (Plodn in the German dialect sappadino, Bladen in German, Sapade or Ploden in Friulian, Sapada in Ladin) is an Italian municipality of 1 300 inhabitants of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. German-speaking linguistic island, it is a famous summer and winter tourist resort; in 2007 it received the orange flag quality award. Sappada rises to an altitude of 1.245 m s.l.m. in the north-eastern extremity of the Dolomites between Cadore and Carnia on the border between Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The country extends in an east-west direction along the entire valley crossed by the Piave river, whose sources are located in the municipal area at 1,800 m asl. at the foot of Mount Peralba. Sappada is surrounded by impressive and evocative Dolomite massifs, the landscape is characterized by green pastures and extensive coniferous forests; numerous waterfalls and alpine lakes.
The environment surrounding Sappada is still uncontaminated and this is positively reflected in the variety of animal and plant species that live in the valley. In the forests of fir and larch trees that surround Sappada with a little luck, we can observe: the capercaillie, the mountain pheasant, the white partridge, the ermine, the red fox, the alpine hare and the squirrel.
info: The climate is typically alpine with cool summers (especially between August and September when the period is even more rainy unlike July which is warmer) and harsh and snowy winters; the snow period lasts from early December to early April. The mid-seasons on the other hand are usually ventilated, cool and quite rainy. Furthermore the orientation of the east-west valley allows excellent sunshine both in summer and in winter, in fact the sappadina basin is also called "La valle del sole".
