Petropavlovsk-KamÄatskij is a Russian city in the Russian Far East, located on the Kamchatka peninsula and capital of the administrative unit of the same name within the Russian Federation (Kamchatka Territory). It is located at the foot of the AvaÄa volcano, 6,766 km from Moscow and 2,220 km from Vladivostok.
The city was founded in 1740 by the explorer Vitus Bering, and apparently took its name from the two ships on which its expedition was traveling, the San Paolo and the San Pietro; since then, the city has thrived as a fishing center. For some years a certain tourist industry has begun to develop, given the variety and attractiveness of the Kamchatka landscapes.
The city is served by an airport, as necessary as the city cannot be reached by land from outside the Kamchatka (it shares this primacy with Iquitos in Peru); in addition to the plane, another means of communication in these lands is represented by the boat.
