Neuschwanstein Castle is a castle built at the end of the 19th century and located in the south-west of Bavaria near Füssen, in the town of Schwangau, opposite the Hohenschwangau castle. The German name Neuschwanstein can be translated into Italian as the New Swan Stone, with a possible reference to the idea of the New Swan Stronghold; this name is in fact connected to its construction in the Schwangau - Contea del Cigno territory - which occurred later than in other older castles.
Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a personal retreat and a tribute to the genius of musician Richard Wagner whom he particularly loved, Ludovico paid for the construction of the palace with his own funds without access to the State treasury. The king loved to remain isolated from the world and this place had become a personal refuge for him, but after his death in 1886 it was immediately opened to the public, eager to visit what was praised as an imaginative project.
He inspired the fairy tale castles of Walt Disney, which took him as a model for some of his most famous animated films, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel. It inspired Pandora's castle of the anime series The Knights of the Zodiac.

The castle also appears in the Super Pang arcade video game. In addition, the castle also appears in some images of the film The Great Escape when Lieutenant Hendley flies over the area with a German plane.
