Piedmont (AFI: /pje'monte/; Piemont [pje'munt] in Piedmontese, Occitan and Francoprovençal; Piemont ['pjemont] in Walser; Piémont [pje.mÉ "̃] in French) is a region with ordinary status of 4 377 941 inhabitants in northwestern Italy, with the administrative capital-as well as the historical capital-the city of Turin.
It borders France to the west (Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions), Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Switzerland to the north (cantons Valais and Ticino), Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast (for just under 8 km) and Liguria to the south.
Piedmont is Italy's second-largest region by area (the first on the peninsula), sixth-largest by number of inhabitants, second-largest by number of municipalities, the westernmost in Italy, and is part of the Alps-Mediterranean Euroregion and the Alpine Macroregion.
It is also the fourth-largest region in terms of exports, with a 10 percent share of the national total, and fifth in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) value, with about 143 billion euros total.
Per capita income is higher than the Italian average.
