Civic Archaeological Museum Lavinium

The Archaeological Museum, born in 2005, is located in a building located in Pratica di Mare, in the medieval village that occupies the acropolis of the ancient center of Lavinium, the sacred city of the Latins.

In the various sections there are exhibits dating back to the 10th century. B.C. and the Roman age, among which the exceptional statue of Minerva and the large votive statues in terracotta, mainly female, coming from the sanctuary of the goddess frequented by the Lavinate aristocracy, can be mentioned in the room of "Minerva Tritonia". The ritual vases with black figures of Greek import are very interesting, including the famous cup of the Dioscuri, from the sixth century. BC, and other votive objects found in the sanctuary of the XIII altars, located south of the hill on which the town stood. Among the most ancient finds are the funerary objects of the protohistoric necropolis, with tombs dated between the 10th and 7th centuries. B.C. to which belong the jewels and female work tools, spindles, spindles, loom weights and spools, exhibited in the space called "Mundus Muliebris" together with other heads and busts that illustrate the rites practiced in the sanctuary.

The last room is dedicated to Aeneas, the Trojan hero; there are collected many of the objects of the funeral equipment found in the so-called Heroon of Aeneas, a sepulchral monument in which the ancients thought the mythical character was deposed, among these are noteworthy in addition to the personal equipment, the sword, the spears and the sacrificial knife, the numerous vases decorated with engravings to store and drink wine, the large skewers with iron andirons used to roast the meat in the ritual banquet and curious objects such as the bronze grater of the seventh century. BC, used to "season" the wine with goat cheese as required by Greek fashion. The extraordinary doors in tuff of the IV century are placed in the center of the room. B.C. that closed the cell of the Heroon in the last reconstruction of the monument.

The Museum has an extremely innovative setting in which multimedia and traditional exposure coexist, suitable for a diversified audience.

These are, in particular, the "talking statues", an effective system that animates the statues through a video, donated by children of the aristocracy washed in the moment of transition between adolescence and adulthood.

In the space dedicated to Aeneas, the suggestive blue room, the video "The journey" reconstructs the route followed by Aeneas through images and computer graphics, before reaching Lazio, at today's Torvaianica; "The ship" follows, a valid 3D reconstruction of the setting up of a ship from the Bronze Age, the time of Aeneas.

In the following room "Civitas Religiosa" a compelling digital reconstruction illustrates the history of the Shrine of the Altars, one of the most important sacred places in Lazio in the Archaic period, a point of reference for the Latin people.

A virtual priest addresses visitors directly, exposing the profound sense of worship towards the god of the altars, probably Aeneas Indiges, the founding forefather of the sacred city, to whom the Heroon of Aeneas is directly linked, on display in the last section of the Museum. Here again a 3D documentary accompanies the traditional exhibition, clarifying how much studies have so far managed to reconstruct the fascinating story linked to Aeneas and her mysterious disappearance after the battle against Mezentius.

The last page of the Museum is dedicated to the Trojan hero in which, through a suggestive and engaging video, the hero, with his questions and doubts about him, turns with hope to his father Anchises.
