The restored factory includes an elegant museum of art and culture with traveling exhibitions and restaurant.
The Museum of Cultures of Milan (Mudec) is a museum and exhibition center inaugurated in 2014, dedicated to the enhancement and interdisciplinary research on world cultures. In the Mudec the finds and collections of the ethnographic and anthropological collections of the Municipality of Milan were found. The museum spaces are also an exhibition center for temporary exhibitions and events.
The permanent exhibition of the Mudec collects 7,000 works of art, everyday objects, fabrics and musical instruments from all the continents of the world and aims to provide a representation of the diversity assumed by the cultures of man in time and space.
The project of the museum was signed by the British architect David Chipperfield. The building, which occupies an area of 17,000 square meters, is spread over two different floors. The ground floor, intended for the reception of visitors, includes spaces for the Forum of Cultures, a specialized library, a multi-purpose conference space, a restoration laboratory and a space dedicated to children and young visitors (Mudec Junior).
The actual exhibition itinerary is developed within the first floor, articulated around a large central covered square, with a quadrilobate shape, from which the rooms dedicated to temporary exhibitions and permanent collections branch off. The salient feature of the architecture is the contrast between the curved lines of the central transit space and the geometric and regular volumes of the individual exhibition halls, a contrast accentuated by the different shades of light and color of the different rooms. The logo of the museum is represented.
