The Island of the Dolls - Cursed Island of Xochimilco

Nestled in the Xochimico channel near Mexico City lies one of the world's most eerie and chilling places: the "Island of the Dolls".

The Island of the Dolls

Initially far from a tourist destination, this island has an unsettling history. Originally dedicated to a young girl who tragically lost her life, the Island of the Dolls (Isla de las Munecas in Spanish) has transformed into a captivating yet eerie tourist spot.

As the name suggests, the island is adorned with hundreds of mutilated and weathered dolls. These dolls, with their empty white eyes, sad expressions, and eerie positions, are hung from trees, ferns, bushes, and branches of all sorts, creating an unsettling ambiance.

Isola delle Bambole in Messico è un luogo maledetto?

Walking through this sea of dolls during the day can be a spine-chilling experience, and spending the night near them is accompanied by the constant creaking and rustling sounds, as well as the weight of hundreds of eyes watching you.

The story of these dolls originates from a tragedy associated with the island's former inhabitant, Don Julian Santana. Julian discovered the lifeless body of a drowned girl in the canal and, soon after, found a doll floating nearby – likely belonging to the girl.

He hung the doll on a tree as a tribute to the young girl, hoping it would bring her soul peace and deter any malevolent forces from the island. However, one doll was not enough for Julian's tormented mind.

He began hanging dolls all over the island, even those broken or damaged. As time went on, the island's trees became adorned with countless dolls. It got to a point where Julian started trading his produce for dolls, believing that the dolls held the spirit of the drowned girl and that by appeasing her, he could keep evil at bay. The story took a darker turn in 2001 when Don Julian drowned in the same canal as the girl years earlier.

Many speculate that the dolls, possessed by malicious spirits, were responsible for his death. Others believe his drowning was a mere accident, and now the dolls reign as the true inhabitants of the island. Despite efforts to uncover the truth about the island's supposed hauntings, the mystery remains shrouded behind the glassy stares of the silent dolls. Visiting the island is no easy task, but the journey is worth it.

From dolls with violently torn hair to charred and blackened figures, the island holds a macabre charm. While Julian's intentions were likely pure, the result of his work is far from soothing. Many dolls seem to follow you with their gaze across the island.

Some visitors claim to hear sinister whispers behind them, while others hear the laughter of children emanating from the dense forest.
