The Capitol is an example of the neoclassical style. The current building is the result of the work of numerous architects.
The original design is due to William Thornton, but was later modified by Stephen Hallet, Benjamin Latrobe and, finally, by Charles Bulfinch. Thomas U. Walter and August Schoenborn designed the present dome and the buildings housing the House of Representatives and the Senate, whose construction was overseen by Edward Clark.
The building is characterized by the huge central dome that rises on a rotunda, connecting two side wings that house the two branches of the Congress
