Oristano is the main city in the central-western part of Sardinia, it presents itself as an ideal gateway to an area rich in natural beauty and represents the noble soul of the island, with its monuments and its intense history.
An event expected all year round: the charm of Oristano is released on the occasion of the equestrian carousel of sa Sartiglia, emblem of the city's traditions: on Sunday and Fat Tuesday of Carnival it attracts visitors from all over the world. The ceremonials of the event evoke the glorious past linked to the guilds. The history of the city relives in the festival, together with the taste of almond desserts and Vernaccia, a typical local wine.
Oristano played a leading role in the history of Sardinia: from the 11th century the city center began to embellish itself with palaces, fortifications, towers and religious buildings. Highlights are the majestic tower of San Cristoforo - also known as the tower of Mariano - and the monument of Giudicessa Eleonora (1881), promoter of the Carta de Logu, one of the first codes of laws written in Europe. Also not to be missed is the Antiquarium Arborense museum, inside the Parpaglia palace, where you will admire finds from the excavations of Tharros, and the churches of San Francesco, in neoclassical style, of Santa Chiara, a rare example of Gothic style on the island, and the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (dated 1130).
After a day among monuments and lunch based on malloreddus with sausage and, as a dessert, mustazzolus, a walk to Torregrande, the Oristano beach par excellence, is ideal. While in the neighboring territories you will find the splendid beaches of the marine area of ??the Sinis peninsula, with quartz granules (Mari Ermi, Is Arutas and Maimoni) and fine sand (San Giovanni), the limestone promontories and the beautiful beaches near Putzu Idu and further north the suggestive natural monument of s'Archittu.

The territory around Oristano is characterized by numerous lagoons, including those of Cabras and Santa Giusta, habitat of numerous species of rare birds. From the wetlands comes one of the resources of the area: the fish industry, which together with the confectionery, wine production and artisan excellence of ceramics, wood and wrought iron represent, in addition to being the basis of the local economy, also attractions for visitors.
