Livorno is an Italian port city on the west coast of Tuscany.
It is known for its seafood specialties, Renaissance fortifications and modern cruise ship port.
The central Terrazza Mascagni, an avenue along the sea with a checkerboard floor, is the main meeting point of the city. The ramparts of the 16th century Old Fortress overlook the harbor and open onto the Venezia Nuova district of Livorno.
Among all the Tuscan cities it is usually considered the most modern, although in its territory there are several historical, artistic and architectural testimonies that survived the massive bombings of the Second World War. The city, which developed considerably from the second half of the 16th century by the will of the Medici first and the Lorraine later, was an important free port frequented by numerous foreign merchants, seat of consulates and shipping companies.
This helped to affirm, since the end of the sixteenth century, the characteristics of a multiethnic and multicultural city par excellence, of which important vestiges survive, such as national churches and cemeteries, palaces, villas and public utility works inextricably linked to the names of the important foreign communities that they frequented the free port until the second half of the nineteenth century. This international vocation led to the identification of the city as Leghorn in the United Kingdom and in the United States of America, Livourne in France, Llievo in Spain etc., similarly to the most important state capitals of the time.
Between the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, parallel to the start of the industrialization process, Livorno was also a tourist destination of international importance due to the presence of renowned bathing establishments and spas, which gave the city the nickname of Montecatini al mare.
The city is famous for hosting the Sanctuary of Montenero, named after the Madonna delle Grazie patron saint of Tuscany, as well as for being the birthplace of prestigious personalities such as Amedeo Modigliani, Pietro Mascagni, Giovanni Fattori, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and many others.
Livorno is the seat of the Naval Academy of the Navy, of the command and two regiments of the "Folgore" Parachute Brigade of the Italian Army, of the 1st "Tuscania" Parachute Carabinieri Regiment, of the 9th "Col Moschin" Parachute Assault Regiment framed in special forces of the Italian Army and the Carabinieri Special Intervention Group; it is also the seat of the Maritime Directorate of the Port Authority Corps - Coast Guard.
