Maiori is a beautiful coastal town located in the Campania region, in the province of Salerno. Its history is ancient, dating back to Roman times, but it was in the Middle Ages that the city experienced its maximum splendor thanks to the construction of numerous religious and civil buildings.
Among the places of greatest interest are the Church of Santa Maria a Mare, dating back to the 11th century and rebuilt after the 1954 earthquake, the Norman Tower, an imposing 10th century watchtower that offers a panoramic view of the city, the Palazzo Mezzacapo, an ancient 18th century noble residence, and the Castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano, an imposing medieval castle located on the hill behind Maiori.
But Maiori is also known for its splendid beaches and its coast, among the most beautiful in Cilento and the Amalfi Coast, with crystal clear sea and breathtaking landscapes. Maiori beach, almost a kilometer long, is the largest in the area and offers numerous bathing establishments and restaurants where you can taste the local cuisine based on fresh fish and typical products of the area.
It is the second municipality of the Amalfi Coast by number of inhabitants and by territorial extension.
Precisely as part of the Amalfi Coast, since 1997 the municipal area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
