Carini Door

Carini Door (Porta Carini) is one of the oldest gates in the city of Palermo, the date of first construction is unknown, the first certain date is 1310 when it is documented in the testamentary provisions of Benvenuta Mastrangelo about the donation of land located in the immediate vicinity, shop juridical in favor of the religious of the Magione.

At this gate Charles of Anjou, Duke of Calabria, in 1325 led the clashes that involved three other city entrances. The damage caused was later repaired with restoration works commissioned by Ubertino La Grua, who, for the merits lent to the crown, was invested on 26 August 1397 with the land of Carini and many other privileges.

In 1552 the homonymous bulwark was built to protect the passage, by the viceroy of Sicily Carlo d'Aragona Tagliavia, prince of Castelvetrano and duke of Terranova. The road leaving the fortified walls leads to the church of San Francesco di Paola and was commissioned by Aleramo del Carretto, Count of Gagliano, praetor in 1596.

In 1782 the gate was demolished to be rebuilt again without a vaulted arch: decorated with carved stones, columns, balustrades and top ornamental vases. In the immediate vicinity was a prison.

In 1789 the bulwark was purchased by the nuns of the Concezione monastery who used it as a lookout, recreational and leisure environment.

In 2003 the municipality took care of the restoration bringing it back to its ancient splendor and equipped it with a night lighting system.
