Church of Santa Maria del Carmine

The Church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Catanzaro is located in the Grècia district, an ancient district of Greek origin to the south-east of the historic center. The original name was the church of Santa Maria di Cataro.

The church was built in the seventeenth century and remodeled in the following century, has a facade modified in the twentieth century and the interior with a single nave with side chapels.

The church was annexed to the homonymous Carmelite convent and to the 17th century oratory.

In the years following the Second World War, around the fifties, the façade of the church underwent considerable transformations, together with the bell tower, in which the façade, in the center of which there was a fresco, was covered with travertine slabs.

Architecture

The interior consists of a single nave with four side chapels, a large and deep presbytery, remodeled in the 1950s and 1960s by some works, which replaced the old altar.

The chapels host masonry altars, from the late Baroque and Rococo era, dedicated to Carmelite saints and embellished with paintings that are still visible in their original location.
