Former church that houses virtual reconstructions related to the Salerno medical school in the Renaissance.
The Virtual Museum of the Salerno Medical School is located in via dei Mercanti 74, the ancient commercial artery of the historic center of Salerno, not far from the Cathedral. Inaugurated in 2009, it replaces the old Didactic Museum of the Salerno Medical School with a complete restoration not only of the structure, but of the entire museum organization.
The museum is housed inside the former Church of San Gregorio, built in the Lombard period of Salerno around the year one thousand. The Virtual Museum of Salerno, managed by local associations, is based on a very modern organization: films and 3D reproductions, interpreted by professional actors, retrace the techniques and knowledge of the Salerno Medical School, especially in its centuries of glory (X - 13th century).
There are, displayed in luminous panels, reproductions of the precious manuscript and illuminated manuscripts of medieval production of the Salerno Medical School.
The section most sought after by tourists is the one where the famous Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum is exhibited, the work to which the world fame of the Medical School is most closely linked.
The floor of the main room is made of glass, so as to leave the ancient pre-existing structure visible. By observing carefully you will see a series of surgical instruments, original and reconstructed, by the first doctors in history. Finally, the panels dedicated to Trotula de Ruggiero, the first female doctor in history, are of interest, offering visitors a careful analysis of the role of women in the Middle Ages.
