Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva - Virtual Tour 360°

The Church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva makes the splendid scenery of Piazza del Comune, within the historic center of Assisi, even more suggestive.

Used for worship in 1539 at the behest of Pope Paul III, it was built inside an ancient Roman temple.

Since the early Middle Ages, the cell of the temple was used as a small church dedicated to San Donato.

During the thirteenth century it was taken over by the Municipality, which divided the structure into two floors, assigning the lower floor as a prison and the upper one as a council chamber.

The current appearance of the interior dates back to the 17th-18th centuries; in 1634 the church, already dedicated to Santa Maria sopra Minerva from 1539, was raised and extended on a project by Giacomo Giorgetti.

The altar on the right is decorated with a canvas with the Death of Sant'Andrea Avellino by Anton Maria Garbi while the one on the left is the Death of St. Joseph painted by Martin Knoeller.
