The Borgo Marinari rises on the ancient islet of Megaride where the Castel dell'Ovo dominates imposingly. It is located between the districts of San Ferdinando and Chiaia, in front of via Partenope.
The islet of Megaride as early as the 1st century BC. C. was the seat of an annex of the Villa of Licinio Lucullo. In the 5th century, some Basilian monks settled here and founded their convent, first dedicated to San Salvatore and, subsequently, to San Sebastiano. For this reason the islet was called Isolotto di San Salvatore. Today only the church of San Salvatore remains of the convent.
Due to the threat of a Norman invasion, in the late ducal period, the monks were transferred to make way for a fortress. After the conquest of Naples, the Normans entrusted the transformation of the fort into a fortress to the architect Buono. This is the Castel dell'Ovo embryo.
The life of the village is linked to the activities of its marina and those of the neighboring village of Santa Lucia of which it constitutes the outlet to the sea.
In the past, the blue hulls of cigarette smugglers departed from here. Only in the 90s the police were able to definitively eradicate these lucrative traffics.
Today the village has been cleaned up and mainly hosts cultural and tourist activities. The marina supports the operation of the nautical clubs of the Santa Lucia quay where numerous motorboats, yachts and sailing boats are moored.
In addition to the castle, the village consists of a few houses. The six buildings, all on two floors, and in the center there is a small square.
Given the tourist vocation, the commercial activities are mostly bars and restaurants, but there is no shortage of shops and workshops for boating.
