Derwent Pencil Museum

The Derwent Pencil Museum is located in Keswick in the North West of England.

The museum attracts over 80,000 visitors a year with an interesting exhibition of pencil making, local history, a take-away food and drink service, retail spaces displaying Derwent products, art demonstrations and workshops.

Located in Keswick, the home of the first pencil, visitors enter this museum through a replica of the graphite mine that would have been the source of the pencil industry more than three centuries ago. A journey to discover graphite and pencil from its humble will begin as a craft industry to modern production.

Discover our secret WWII pencils with hidden maps; one of the largest colored pencils in the world measuring almost 8 meters; The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pencil; miniature pencil sculptures; and much more! We also have a Derwent fine arts retail shop, run art workshops, and there's a coffee shop with free Wi-Fi. A great day out for the family and we look forward to welcoming you.

The museum opened in 1981 and houses one of the largest colored pencils in the world, designed by technical manager Barbara Murray. The yellow pencil was completed on May 28, 2001, is 7.91 meters (26 feet) long and weighs 446.36 kilograms (984.1 lbs).

The first pencil factory in Keswick was opened in 1832. The second and current factory was started in the 1920s and completed in 1950 (closed in 2007 when the owners moved production to Workington).
