Honduras

Honduras formerly called Ondura, officially the Republic of Honduras (in Spanish República de Honduras), is a republic of Central America. The country faces the Gulf of Honduras to the north-west, the Caribbean Sea to the north and east, it borders Nicaragua to the east, the Pacific Ocean's Gulf of Fonseca to the south and to the west it borders El Salvador. and Guatemala.

Before the Spanish conquest, the area of present-day Honduras was inhabited by pre-Columbian populations, including the Maia.

Having gained independence in 1821, Honduras has always maintained a republican type of order.

Honduras is a presidential republic. The official language is Spanish, but in the Islas de la Bahía the English language prevails. Inland regions are also spoken indie languages (miskito, sumu, lenca and garifuna).

It is one of the most violent countries in the Americas and one of the most dangerous in the world due to the very high crime rate, mainly linked to drug trafficking. San Pedro Sula, the second largest city by population after the capital Tegucigalpa, has the world record in the homicide rate, 169 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to a 2013 report.

Honduras is a Central American nation bordered by the Caribbean Sea in the north and the Pacific Ocean in the south. In the tropical forest near Guatemala is the ancient Mayan ceremonial site of Copán where hieroglyphs carved into the rock and numerous steles, tall stone monuments are preserved.

In the Caribbean Sea are the Islas de la Bahía, a famous diving site that is part of the 1000 km long Mesoamerican coral reef.

Honduras was the homeland of the ancient Mayan people, who, however, had almost completely abandoned the region since the 10th century to move further north, to present-day Guatemala and Mexico (Yucatán peninsula).
