Chez Galip Hair Museum

In this museum, in Turkey, thousands of locks of hair are preserved that completely cover the walls of the rooms, some are even accompanied by annotations and photos.

In the small town of Avanos in Turkey, 16,000 locks of women's hair hang from the ceiling of a pottery and earthenware workshop. And although Cappadocia in Turkey has been well known for its pottery for thousands of years, it is this human hair museum that brings tourists.

The story goes that the local potter Galip Korukcu was saying goodbye to a friend, when he asked her for something to keep in memory. She cut off a lock of his hair and gave it to him, and the potter put it in his shop. The potter used to tell the story of this lock of hair to visitors and, not to be outdone, the other women decided to leave their hair to him.

Now, all that hair is covering the walls of this cave. The women who come here are invited to cut a lock of hair and attach it to a card containing their contact details.

Why not? Twice a year Korukcu asks a customer to choose 10 strands of hair from the walls, and the owners of the hair win a week of free stay in the adjacent annex and a workshop with the master potter.
