In Minnesota is the museum that houses the largest ball of twine made by a single man: Francis Johnson, which has become so popular that the city hosts Twine Ball Day every year.
There are multiple claims about the world's largest ball of twine record in the United States. As of 2014, the longest-circumferential ball of twine is located in Cawker City, Kansas.
Darwin, Minnesota is home to a coiled baler twine ball from Francis A. Johnson. It is 3.7 m (12 ft) in diameter and weighs 7,900 lbs (7,900 kg; 8.7 short tons). Johnson began rolling twine in March 1950 and has been wrapping four hours a day for 29 years. It is currently housed in a gated gazebo facing the Municipal Park on Main Street to prevent the public from touching it.
The city celebrates "Twine Ball Day" on the second Saturday in August each year. An adjacent museum run by volunteers, free to visit the museum and a gift shop, offers information on the history of the dance, as well as selling a variety of souvenirs.
He was the longtime holder of the "biggest ball of twine" title in the Guinness Book of Records, holder of the title from its completion in 1979 until 1994, and was mentioned by "Weird Al" Yankovic in his 1989 song "The The greatest twine dance in Minnesota. "
