The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is a museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
MAAT is a cultural project for the city of Lisbon that is focused on three areas - Art, Architecture, and Technology.
The €20m museum sits on the River Tagus (Rio Tejo) to the west of the city centre and "one of Europe's most lyrical new museums".
Since 2016 that of the MAAT, contains two buildings, the restored one of the ancient Central Tejo and the brand new Kunsthalle of the MAAT with the aim of exploring contemporary culture through the visual arts, architecture, media, science and technology.
The Central Tejo, built in 1908; after having been in operation until the 1970s and subsequently used as a Museum of Electricity until 1990, it is now converted into an exhibition and event space.
The museum project was born from Fundacao EDP (Energias de Portugal), the main Portuguese electricity company, a foundation which, among other things, promotes art; the starting idea was to create a new space where art and the public could talk about the world in which we live.
It establishes a connection between the new building and the Tejo Power Station, one of Portugal's most prominent examples of industrial architecture from the first half of the 20th century, and one of the most visited museums in the country.
The museum is designed by Amanda Levete Architects.
Museum is exempt in a former power plant on the river, with exhibits on renewable energy and electrical phenomena.
