Ljubljana Castle, one of the many castles in the Slovenian capital, is actually the largest and undoubtedly the most famous. Built in the fifteenth century, today it is one of the most important tourist attractions of the city, thanks to its historical-artistic value and the wonderful view over the city it offers, being placed on top of the hill in the historic center of Ljubljana. Home to numerous cultural events, Ljubljana Castle stands out as one of the must-sees if you are visiting the city.
The construction of the castle had the purpose of defending the territory from the Turkish invasions, very frequent between the 15th and 16th centuries; in the following two centuries, however, the castle served as a military hospital and also housed an imposing arsenal.
Upon the arrival of Napoleon (1809), the situation for Ljubljana and its citizens changed radically: the revolt against the Habsburgs broke out, during which the Clock Tower was demolished (1813) before being rebuilt in stone and becoming a of the main attractions of the castle.
