Palace of Culture and Science

The Palace of Culture and Science is located in the center of Warsaw, Poland, is 237 meters high and has 42 floors.

For several decades it was the second tallest building in Europe, the first being the main building of the Moscow State University, only three meters taller.

Inside there are museums, congress halls, theaters, cinemas and offices. The first floors have not very spacious rooms, due to the space occupied by the imposing load-bearing walls.

The palace was donated to Poland by the Soviet Union and was designed by Lev Vladimirovich Rudnev as a replica of the main building of the Lomonosov University (also a design by Rudnev).

Its construction began in 1952 and was finished in 1955; it was built by around 3,500 workers mostly from the Soviet Union, 16 of whom died during the works.

It is also known as Stalin's Palace: it was built by his will as a gift to the city of Warsaw and officially bore his name as a result of the resolution of the Council of State and the Council of Ministers of the Polish People's Republic of 7 March 1953 (two days later the death of the Soviet dictator).
