ArtScience Museum

The ArtScience museum is housed in an iconic building, reminiscent of a blooming flower, or an open hand. The building consists of 21 galleries plus a room for important exhibitions; it was designed by the Israeli architect Moshe Safdie and is one of a kind.

The sustainable design of the ArtScience museum
The ArtScience museum features sustainable design and is easily recognizable in the city. The roof, which resembles a lotus flower, is designed to collect rainwater destined for a swimming pool located at the foot of the building, water which is then recycled and used in the building's systems. Each petal is equipped with a skylight that allows to illuminate the interiors with natural light, thus reducing the consumption of electricity.

ArtScience Museum is a museum within the integrated Marina Bay Sands resort in downtown Singapore's downtown area. Opened on February 17, 2011 by Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, it is the first ArtScience museum in the world, with major exhibits that blend art, science, culture and technology.

Although a permanent exhibition has been planned at the ArtScience Gallery, the Museum mainly hosts traveling exhibitions curated by other museums.

Architecture is said to be a shape that resembles a lotus flower. It was designed by Moshe Safdie.

Named "Singapore's Welcoming Hand" by Las Vegas Sands President Sheldon Adelson, the ArtScience Museum is anchored in the center by a round base, with ten extensions called "fingers". The design concept for each finger denotes various gallery spaces with "fingertip" skylights, which are included as sustainable lighting for the curved interior walls.

Gallery spaces
The ArtScience Museum has 21 galleries with a total area of 64,583 square feet (6,000 square meters).

Features of sustainability
Rainwater is collected and channeled along the center of the building, flowing through its bowl-shaped roof into a reflective pond at the lowest level of the building. The rainwater is then recycled for use in the building's toilets.
