St. Stephen's Basilica


St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent István Bazilika) is a basilica located in the Pest area of ​​the city of Budapest, Hungary.

It is the co-cathedral of the archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest. It was designed starting in 1850 and finished in 1905. Its capacity is about 8,000 faithful.

The architectural style is mainly neoclassical.

The construction of the building, designed in 1850 by József Hild, began in 1851. After the architect's death, in 1867 the direction of the works passed to Miklós Ybl, who built the imposing dome in 1868.

The church, later completed in 1906 by Jozsef Kauser, it was consecrated in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I and elevated to the dignity of a minor basilica in 1938, on the 900th anniversary of the death of Saint Stephen.
