The French fries museum (in Dutch, Frietmuseum) is an exhibition space dedicated to the history of potatoes and the production of Belgian fries. It is located in one of the oldest buildings in Bruges, in the Saaihalle palace, the former "Loggia of the Genoese merchants".
Absolutely amazing! Until now, there was no Frietmuseum in the world, which means that the Frietmuseum in Bruges is the first and only museum dedicated to French fries.
Together with the delicious Belgian chocolate, the Belgian potato is certainly the most distinctive product of Belgian culinary expertise. Over the years, french fries have become world famous to the delight of adults and children in virtually every country and we can be proud that they actually come from Belgium.
Therefore, it is not only normal, but also absolutely necessary that the first French fries museum be opened in Belgium.
The Frietmuseum in Bruges gives the answers to all these questions and many more.
This educational museum is housed in the Saaihalle, one of the most beautiful buildings in Bruges, which further increases its attraction for tourists. It explains the history of the potato and french fries and the different toppings with which they are usually served.
On the ground floor you can learn about the fascinating history of the potato that originated in Peru more than 10,000 years ago.
On the first floor the visitor can discover the history of French fries and how they arrived in Belgium and in the basement of the palace, in the medieval cellars, it is even possible to taste some of them.
The Frietmuseum completes the choice of museums in harmony with all the others that the city of Bruges has to offer and allows the visitor to discover the origins of one of the greatest Belgian culinary specialties, of which we are very proud: fried potatoes.
The museum was created by the Cédric and Eddy Van Belle families who also created the Belgian chocolate museum, Choco-Story, and the home lighting museum, Lumina Domestica in Bruges.
