The National Museum of History and Art (Luxembourg: Nationalmusée fir Geschicht in Konscht, French: Musée national d'histoire et d'art, German: Nationalmuseum für Geschichte und Kunst), abbreviated to MNHA, is a museum located in the city of Luxembourg, in southern Luxembourg. It is dedicated to displaying works of art and artifacts from all eras of Luxembourg's history. The museum is located in Fishmarket, the historic heart of the city, in the Ville Haute district.
The MNHA presents for the first time a selection of 38 photographs from a donation made within the Project Museum.
The Museum Project is a philanthropic association of American photographers, founded in 2012 by Californian photographers Robert von Sternberg and Darryl Curran, with the aim of expressing their gratitude to the institutions that support photography as a form of artistic expression. As part of the project, the participating artists or their representatives donate antique and contemporary prints of their work to the collections of selected museums.
Since its inception in October 2012, The Museum Project has donated over 6,095 photographs to 215 permanent institutional fine art collections in 50 states in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Luxembourg and Switzerland.
In June 2020, MNHA received a total of 58 works by 12 contemporary artists: Barry Andersen, Darryl Curran, Robert Fichter, Suda House, Victor Landweber, Kenda North, Sheila Pinkel, Bonnie Schiffman, Michael Stone, Robert von Sternberg, Melanie Walker und Nancy Webber.
This is the first time that a selection of 38 photographs from this generous donation has been presented, reflecting a multitude of contemporary perspectives and a rich assortment of styles, concepts and photographic materials.
The museum prologue, which presents a shortcut to the history of the town and the museum since 1839, offers an illuminating introduction at the end of which the visitor is invited to continue his journey in a targeted way.
The first proposal for such a museum was made during the French occupation of the Revolutionary Wars, when Luxembourg was annexed to the Forêts department. However, the museum never opened, despite the expropriation of a number of artifacts from the church.
With the affirmation of the independence of Luxembourg under the Treaty of London of 1839, the interest of native Luxembourgers in promoting the history of their country increased. In 1845, historians and archaeologists formed the "Society for the Study and Conservation of Historical Monuments in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg" (in French: Société pour la recherche et conservation of historical monuments dans le Grand-Duché de Luxembourg), regularly known as the "Archaeological Society" (French: Société archéologique). The company has taken on the responsibility of maintaining a collection of historical antiquities from the University of Luxembourg City.
In 1868, the Society received an impetus from the founding of the Royal-Grand Ducal Institute (French: Institut royal grand-ducal), among whose responsibilities was the conservation of the archaeological collections.
The museum was expanded with a new building designed by Christian Bauer et Associés, which opened in 2002.
