MAS - Museum aan de Stroom

The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS; Dutch for "River Museum) is a museum located along the Schelde River in the Eilandje district of Antwerp, Belgium.

It was opened to the public in May 2011 and is the largest museum of the city.

The MAS stands 60 meters high and was designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects.

The facade is made of Indian red sandstone and with curved glass panels.

It is an example of postmodern Art Deco architecture. The MAS houses 470,000 objects, most of which are stored in warehouse.

The first gallery visible to visitors is the "visible shop", which contains 180,000 objects.

The main theme of the works and objects exhibited at MAS is the long history of Antwerp as an important international port. In addition, through QR codes placed next to most of the exhibits, visitors can access the website information in five different languages.

MAS is more than a museum. It is an impressive warehouse in the middle of the lively "het Eilandje" district. A pedestrian walkway with meter-high glass sections leads up to 60 meters high. A new story about Antwerp, electricity, the port and the world awaits you on every floor.

The collection of 500,000 museum pieces offers a refreshing insight into the city and its centuries-old contacts with the world in permanent and changing exhibitions. And up to the top, on the 10th floor, you can enjoy a 360 degree panorama of the city, the harbor and the stream.
