Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Amsterdam State Museum), often referred to simply as the Rijksmuseum, is a museum located in Stadhouderskade, 42 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The museum has the largest collection of Dutch Golden Age paintings (1584-1702) and a sizeable collection of Asian art.

The museum was founded in 1800 in The Hague, to exhibit the collections of Dutch statolders, following the French example. It was then known as the National Art Gallery (Dutch: Nationale Kunst-Gallerij). In 1808 the museum was moved to Amsterdam by order of Louis Napoleon, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. City-owned paintings, such as Rembrandt's Night Watch, became part of the collection.
