The patriarchal cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore is the main place of Catholic worship in the city of Lisbon, the mother church of the metropolitan archdiocese of the same name.
In 1150, three years after reconquering Lisbon from the Moors, Alfonso I of Portugal had a cathedral built for the new bishop of Lisbon, the English crusader Gilbert of Hastings, on the grounds of an old mosque. Sé is the abbreviation for "Sede episcopalis", that is the episcopal seat. The cathedral, destroyed by three earthquakes in the fourteenth century and that of 1755, underwent considerable transformations over the centuries and today is a collection of various architectural styles.
