Pirelli HangarBicocca, also known as HangarBicocca is an exhibition space dedicated to modern and contemporary art located in the Bicocca district of Milan.
The building was originally an industrial plant of the AnsaldoBreda company then acquired by Pirelli in 2004 and subsequently converted into 1,500 square meters of exhibition galleries.
Since its opening, Pirelli HangarBicocca has hosted exhibitions by Marina AbramoviÄ ‡, Carsten Höller, Alfredo Jaar, Philippe Parreno, Laure Prouvost and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
It is also the site of a permanent installation by Anselm Kiefer.
The building known as HangarBicocca was originally one of the first most important Italian industrial areas of the twentieth century, as it is connected to the history of the Italian Ernesto Breda Society.
The latter represents a historic company in the Lombard engineering sector, founded in 1886 by the Paduan engineer Ernesto Breda, who contributed to the development of the railway network in Northern Italy through the production of railway carriages, steam and electric locomotives.
