The church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a religious building located in Venice, in the Cannaregio district, it is a casket entirely covered with diamond and square marble slabs made by stone masters among the most capable and inspired of Venice in the 15th century.
When in 1409 Francesco Amadi had a Virgin and Child Jesus painted and posted near his house in a calle not far from Campo Santa Marina, he could not imagine what would happen about 70 years later.
Admiring it from the outside, one cannot help but be enchanted. A polychromy of marble and a harmony of spaces and lines welcomes the eye. Unlike the churches of Venice, the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli was designed, built and decorated by a single artist: Pietro Lombardo and his workshop.
It is a real jewel of the early Venetian Renaissance. Built between 1481 and 1489 on commission by Angelo Amadi, the building was built to house an image of the Virgin and Child considered a miraculous work by Zanino di Pietro (15th century). The Virgin is said to have even brought a drowned man back to life. Today the image is considered a good wish by brides, in fact many decide to get married in this church.
The image would have become miraculous for having saved a woman, sister-in-law of a matchmaker of the Fontego dei Tedeschi, from a few blows with a dagger that were inflicted on her by the same matchmaker for a trivial family quarrel.
When this was reached by the aggressor, near the sacred image, she invoked the Madonna and for these invocations she was considered safe from the blows and for this miraculous. The news spread quickly in Venice and this place became a pilgrimage destination.
