Casa Milà, known as La Pedrera, was built between 1906 and 1912 by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona, Spain, at number 92 of Passeig de Gràcia, in the expansion area of Eixample, on behalf of Roser Segimon and Pere Milà.
The lot on which the Milà house stands is located in the heart of Eixample, a district built in the second half of the 19th century on a project by Ildefons Cerdà i Sunyer, who had faced the dramatic housing emergencies of the historic barrio by foreseeing the construction of a dense network of wide, perpendicular and uniform streets and of large, airy and bright building complexes.
There is no surprise, therefore, if the Eixample apartments immediately became the prerogative of the dynamic and affluent Catalan bourgeoisie, which began to gravitate mainly around the axis constituted by the Passeig de Gràcia, a tree-lined and vibrant street where all the best architects of Barcelona had left their mark.
