Berlin Cathedral

The Berlin Cathedral is the main Lutheran place of worship in Germany.

It is located in the Mitte district, on Schloßplatz. The main entrance opens onto the Lustgarten. Translated into Italian as duomo or cathedral, the church is not a cathedral in the strict sense of the word, because it has never been the seat of a bishop.

The bishop of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesia and Upper Lusatia is based in the Marienkirche.

The original church was built around the middle of the 18th century to a design by Johann Boumann in the Baroque style.

In 1822 it was remodeled in neoclassical style to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In 1894, Emperor Wilhelm II ordered the demolition of the church and its reconstruction.

The works began immediately, based on a project by the architect Julius Raschdorff in a sumptuous neo-baroque style. It was completed in 1905. It is one of the major monuments of the Wilhelminian age.
