Church of the Gesù - Mother Church of the Society of Jesus - Virtual Tour 360°

The works for the construction of the Mother Church of the Society of Jesus in Rome, consecrated on November 25, 1584, began in 1568, 12 years after the death of the founder Ignazio da Loyola, when the General of the Society was Francesco Borgia.

In that year, Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, nephew of Pope Paul III, set up a fund for the construction.

The first projects of the church, already requested by Ignazio, had been designed by Nanni di Baccio Bigio, a Florentine architect.

In 1554, the project was reworked by Michelangelo and then by Vignola (1568), with two needs: the construction of a large nave with a side pulpit, to facilitate preaching and a central altar for the celebration of the Eucharist, according to the prescriptions of the Council of Trent.

The works were directed by Vignola from 1568 to 1575 and then by Giacomo Della Porta until 1580 who reworked the design of the lively facade and designed the dome.
