The Gherardesca garden is located in Florence, between via Gino Capponi, via Giuseppe Giusti, Borgo Pinti and viale Giacomo Matteotti, with the main entrance on piazzale Donatello. The garden is the largest private garden in the historic center of the city. Belonged to friar Durante Chiermontesi, it contained 3,488 exotic plants, oranges and lemons.
The extraordinary harvest, however, was the result of illicit gains, since the friar was deputy to the sale of salt and used to use a bushel with one less stave, charging a greater amount than what he foisted on consumers. Once discovered, the friar was condemned and after his death the garden was destroyed.
