???????San Matteo Church of Lecce

San Matteo Church, a baroque gem nestled in the heart of Lecce's historic center, graces via dei Perroni, 29.

Constructed in the second half of the 17th century, based on the designs of Achille Larducci from Salò (the nephew of Francesco Borromini), this church replaced an ancient fifteenth-century chapel dedicated to the apostle Matthew, accompanied by a convent of Franciscan nuns. The laying of the first stone took place in 1667, commissioned by the Lecce bishop Luigi Pappacoda, and the work was completed in 1700.

Since April 30, 1810, San Matteo has served as the parish church of Santa Maria della Luce, originally established on March 16, 1606, in a church with the same name outside the city walls and later transferred here after the suppression of the Franciscan convent.

San Matteo Church stands as a captivating example of Lecce's baroque architecture. Its richly adorned details, frescoes, and imposing altar bear witness to the craftsmanship of artisans from that era. Beyond being a place of worship, this church provides a fascinating window into the religious and artistic history of Lecce, attracting visitors from near and far.
